Sometimes I wonder why Hollywood delights in down playing the role of God in a certain areas of life, trying to upturn his word and decree. I am not big on movies but I get to relax my Medulla oblongata 🙂 (whatever that means) by watching them every now and then, based on Brian Tracy’s advice for folks like us who do a lot of brain tasking jobs.
So I got to watch the $140,000,000 blockbuster movie titled Exodus, Gods and Kings – the movie that sought to actionize the deliverance of the children of Israel from the grips of the Egyptians. I personally have no qualms with the new ideas brought into the movie but I take exception to the fact that certain miracles performed by God were portrayed to be nothing but “natural occurrences” which of course is hugely misleading.
I honestly can’t do justice to this topic better than David Criswell, Ph.D., who wrote a fantastic, objective review of the movie that you can read here.
The Bible records and I believe that God performed a number of miracles such as the plagues and most importantly the parting of the the red sea. Exodus 14 talks clearly of how the children of Israel walked across the sea:
26 And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.
27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.
29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
The movie is interesting to watch but obviously tried to water down the teachings of the bible. I understand that the producer is an agnostic so you would understand why.
I belong to the class of those who believe in an Almighty God who created the world and sent his only begotten son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. I also believe in the totality of the bible – written by men under the inspiration of the holy spirit.
