7 Commitments I have made this Year

Now, let me say straight up;

no more new year resolutions for me, rather it’s now new year commitments.

I have decided to make some commitments to my Creator, my family, friends, partners, subscribers and myself.

It is my opinion that you will likely achieve more, if you make a commitment to yourself and tell the world about, so that you will be forced to keep to it.

Below are some of my commitments

1. Get closer to God Almighty

This year, I intend to work more for my Creator. It is often been said that your level of spirituality detemines your overall happiness. I am a Christian and I intend to bear good fruits, so irrespective of your beliefs you should also bear good fruits.

The death of my dear sister, Ada Miracle Agbata is the main reason I took this decision. That very experience (read the story here) has become a major turning point in my life, it proves that life is but a candle in the wind.

Consequently, I working on a new site www.jointhehappypeople.com (a Christian site) – I intend to apply my SEO, Social Media consulting skills to create a platform where christian writers can share their thoughts with the purpose of drawing men closer to God.

Food for Thought: Do you consider your Creator in your daily existence? What is your commitment to God?

For Christians: Can people actually see the fruits of the Spirit in you?

2. Make more Impact

I have made a commitment to make a greater impact in the lives of individuals and businesses.

I want to see more testimonials like this;

3. Create more Time for my Family

I have made a commitment to give my family more of my time. I am the work-hard-to-succeed kind of guy, which makes me give less attention to my family. The funny thing is that I always promise them that soon it will all be over and they will have my full attention.

For instance, I feel guilty because I gave more attention to my work than my late sister, I assumed she was going to be here for a long time to come, alas, that was not to be! She was Gone too Soon….. Some things just can’t be b so value them now!

4. Publish 300+ fresh Articles online

I intend to increase the number of articles I have published online by 100%.

I have published well over 300+ articles covering various niche, but with this commitment, I have to publish 300 more articles this year.

5. Become Nigeria’s No. 1 SEO Services Expert

SEO is indeed an emerging field and I predict it will become a huge industry in the nearest future, therefore my commitment is to become Nigeria’s No. 1 SEO Services Expert.

This commitment would enable me make more impact virally.

6. Create more Exposure for my Partners

I am pretty fortunate to have an online brand that grows stronger by the day and this has created a platform to meet people on a regular basis.

Perception is What Makes the Difference in Life

Have you ever considered perception as a great determinant of reality?

Have you ever looked into an issue from more than one perspectives and arrived at similar conclusions or had the same outlook of it? Answering this question in the affirmative is very much unlikely. If you have changed the way you looked at something and you have realized a switch from your understanding of it to what appeared as a new reality of it, you have experienced a change in your perception.

The issue of perception requires constant revisiting and experimentation because there lies the opportunity for continuous and fruitful life renewal.

The story of a young cub which got separated at a tender age and ended up co-habiting a herd of goats, imbibing their herbivorous way of life will be instructive for us to clearly understand what is meant by perception in this piece of writing.

One day a male lion came across an herd of goats and it was astounding for the lion to find a cub among meek goats, docilely eating grass. The lion tried unsuccessfully to convince the cub that it was not and should not be a member of the herd. As the last attempt of the persuasion efforts, the lion took the cub to a river bank, and there, looking at its own reflection in the water the cub finally realized the fact that a cub, truly, couldn’t belong to an herd of goats.

The reality seen of itself by the cub immediately changed. Its perception changed. Whereas, the practice of change of perception is one of the capabilities humanly possible to do consciously and purposely for attaining positive life experiences, many people take this life-changing opportunity for granted.

What is your perception of life?
How do you see yourself?
What perception do you have of being a citizen of your country?
How is your perception of situations around you?
Are you a pessimist or an optimist?
Do you see that things becoming better?
Do you you have the perception that there is a solution to every problem?
Are you constantly plagued by feelings of negativity?
Do you feel that nothing good can come out of your country?
Is your perception showing that despite your best efforts you are destined for failure?
Have you given up on yourself?
Have you passed an unfair judgment on yourself and your community based on unchanging perception?
Have you given yourself an “F” even before you stepped into the exam hall?

Have you ever questioned your perception of things to see the B-side?

If you have a cup filled half-way with water before, you can either see the cup as half full or half empty, it depends on you; your perception. According to Steve Maraboli, the truth is that we always define events in the manner which validates our agreement with reality.

What we call nonsense is that which does not fit into the prearranged patterns and which we have superimposed on reality. Nonsense is nonsense only when we have not yet found that point of view from which it makes sense – Gary Zukav

Look at the picture above. What is the reality of your perception based on the picture? A flower vase? Or two people facing each other? If you are able to see the two, good of you. It demonstrates how effectively you can change your perception of things.

Take note of this fact freshly that there are no barrier to expected reality except what we perceive as barriers and that is why we need to change our perception to experience desired realities. To change ourselves and our society effectively we need to change our perceptions. The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes. We must learn to have different perception things.

Your present situation may be bleak; things may look like the end is imminent. But I can assure you that your ability to make positive confessions and to eschew negativity, pessimism, mediocrity, apathy and other vices is the first step in your journey to success. We have not only the ability to perceive the world but also the ability to alter our perception of it.

Simply put, we can change things by the manner in which we look at them (i.e. the perception we currently have of them). Do not remain set in your old ways (perceptions) of looking at things with apathy and cynicism, for the only thing that is constant is change.

As you step out of your house each day, make a conscious effort to see only the good and the positive in everyone and everything. Do not form blanket opinions or generalizations about issues and be slow to make hasty conclusions about people and situations. It doesn’t make you gullible or weak, it makes you a believer in the human race and it is a good potential to do well and be your best.

If you see yourself as happy, successful, wealthy, beautiful, having a great career and at the top of your game with a positive self-image, then you’re most likely all of these. You are what you see or say. Want to know why? This is because what the eyes can perceive, the mouth confesses and the mind attracts. If you are not sticky to your current perceptions, new realities are in the horizon for your next phase of life.

As such we must continue to challenge ourselves each day, break barriers, conquer new frontiers and accomplish goals. Do not take the limits of your own field of vision for the limits of the world. The bicycle of life will only move if you continue to pedal. Once you stop pedaling you remain stationary. You will be doing yourself and your society a great disservice if we go through life carrying the wrong perceptions.

Don’t forget that by questioning your perception always, new life inceptions that will follow would not be surprises to you.

A time used to experiment with change of perception is never a wasted time.

How Well are You Living your Life

I have been a taking a deeper look at what the essence of life truly is. Is life just about making money, raising a family, becoming more popular or acquiring additional degrees?

It hurts to know that in reality, all these things we go after are what Solomon the wiseman regards as vanity upon vanity, especially looking at my late sister’s case – what people have commended most is not her beauty or educational qualifications but rather her character and love for God.

I just returned from the morgue and what I saw there is most humbling. I saw numerous people lying lifeless and in the midst of them was my late sister – Ada Miracle Agbata.

An inscription reads;

I was ONCE like you…..

I left the morgue asking myself one question, how well am I living my life? Knowing fully well that someday, I would be dead and lifeless, oblivious of what goes on. If ad when my time comes, how do I want to be remembered?

Life is indeed full of many high and low moments and in my case this is indeed a low moment eventhough I am sure my sister has gone to be with the Lord considering how she left this world.

Who am I to complain when the King of Kings says;

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. – 1Th 5:18

It has not been easy but my family has been saying thank you Lord for giving us the opportunity to love her and be loved by her. I know that the events of 6th December, 2011 will be forever fresh in my memory, click here to read the story of how she died.

It is indeed a turning point for me and the begining of greater things to come in my life because I am much more determined to make an impact for God and mankind – so watch out folks

I like how Steve Jobs admonishes us to live everyday like it’s going to be our last (Read his Stanford commencement speech)

Although, I will go on accomplishing my earthly goals and living a purposeful life, my ultimate goal is to make heaven because my sister’s sudden demise proves that Life is indeed a journey.

Ada Miracle Agbata will be laid to rest tomorrow the 15th of December, 2011 at our family compound in Anambra state, to the glory of God Almighty who giveth and taketh!

A great lesson from the SME Toolkit Nigeria Conference

My life is a testimony of what great lessons can do if applied. One luxury entrepreneurship affords me is doing things I love to do, when I want to do them, that’s why I can easily create time out of my extremely busy schedule to share some great lessons with my numerous friends and partners who have come to trust me.

In case you did not know I was one of the speakers at the 2011 SME Toolkit Conference at Terra Kulture, which was indeed a thrilling experience for me and hundreds present.

The summary of the great lesson I wish to share with you is; wherever you find yourself always take ACTION!

I believe so much in action because it speaks louder than words. It is the difference between an achiever and an under achiever.

Below is a simple action I took at the conference that is basically my sole reason of writing this blog post.

Before the event, I had a goal of meeting lots of people at the conference. So, when Randall Kempner, Executive Director of the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) finished his keynote address, I made up my mind that I was going to meet him in person. Read my blog post on the SME Toolkit Nigeria blog based on Randall’s words of wisdom. I could not do that immediately because it was my turn to speak >>>>>

After our session, it was time for a Tea break but Randall had his hands full so I waited patiently, then Peter Bamkole, Director, Enterprise Development Centre of the Pan African University announced that we should settle down for the start of the 2nd session. I sat down for a while and then went outside to look for Randall, I did not see him. I walked in and out of Terra Kulture a total of 4 times and went on to ask some people I saw outside simply because I was a man on a mission.

Finally, I came out the 4th time, walked round again and met Randall outside getting ready to leave the venue for another event and I said to him;

Hi Randall and he responded, how are you doing Fred?

I asked how did I do back there? He said it was pretty cool and we went on and on……

What are the great lessons from this short story?

Always take Action – I took action to get a hot Job with Globacom. In the same vein, I took action to meet Randall, who by the way is now a friend even on Social Media.
Never give up – At some point I asked myself, why are you standing up frequently as if you are the only one in the conference? I chose not to give up and after the 4th trial, I succeeded and now I can boldly share this experience as another great lesson in life.
Don’t be moved by side talks – I believe more people will rather not stand up frequently because they don’t want people to think negative of them but that did not bother me because I had a goal and focused on my goal.
Learn to reach out – Don’t wait for people to find you, reach out to them. Imagine, if you have a great product and all you do is wake up and wake…………., what is going to happen to that business/product?

I hope you learnt a great lesson from this short story? In the days ahead, I will write more about the SME Toolkit Nigeria Conference 2011.

Thank God for the internet you don’t need to be a guru or a multi-millionaire to brand yourself as a Motivational Speaker because there are quite a number of free and inexpensive tools that you can use to get started.

Here are 4 simple ways to brand yourself as a Motivational Speaker;

1. Use Social Media Effectively to brand your self as a Motivational Speaker

I won’t over flog this point because it is one subject matter that is all over the internet, eventhough very few take action. Hope you will take action now.

It is generally believed that social media is not a place to pitch people and talk about your business all day, that does not mean you can’t brand yourself as a Motivational Speaker while having fun and meeting new people. Here are a few tips to make your social media profiles unique;

Upload a photo – I mean your photo and not that of Barack Obama. Upload your photo, President Obama already has all the fame he needs and you can use some, so why not just promote you as the brand.

Write about you

Use up that space. Talk about you and what you can do.
Use up all white space
Fill up your profile page with all your interests.

People assume a website has to be all flashy to be acceptable, as for me that is a no no, all you need is a functional website that you can use to brand yourself as Motivational Speaker. I wish to ask if you are one of those busy helping Yahoo or Google make more money and spread their brand, when you easily have your own personalised email address i.e. mine is cfa at cfagbata dot com – this sells your brand both online and offline.

With so many people and businesses flocking to the internet for information, you should use this opportunity to market yourself. You don’t have to have a website with all the bells and whistles. While your website should look professional, you can still get a started website with low to no monthly costs.

You can now get a free site, thanks to Google and partners for the Get Nigerian Businesses online initiative (read my article on the SME toolkit how to make your GNBO site rank high).

3. Order a set of business cards.

Now that you have a website and a loaded social media profile(s), you should proceed immediately to get yourself a set of business cards. The business card should look professional, with you basic contact information clearly printed on it, so that as you meet new people you can hand it over to them. Remember, the business card is a first impression about you so the question is how do want to be remembered?

Tip: I have my key social media accounts links printed boldly on my business card.

4. Networking, Networking, Networking

I have actually saved the best for the last, networking is a key step to brand your self as a Motivational Speaker. This is one skill that anyone can learn and I highly recommend and encourage you to that start practising it, with time you will become so good and people will think you were born with an exceptional talent. You can network anywhere you go – at home, in school, religious gathering, events, seminars, clubs, office etc.

I am a professional networker (online and offline) and this has helped me meet lots of people worldwide. I have friends in all continents of the world and we interact regularly all thanks to the internet.

It is not difficult to brand yourself as a Motivational Speaker, but you should be ready to give it your all. Start using the above tips to get your brand out there and pretty soon you may get noticed by people that matter.

You receive an email asking for the description of your services or the features of one of your products. As you are reading, you are excited and you feel the request deserves a well-constructed reply which, in your opinion, should be written NOT NOW but around your work closing time or early in the morning the next day.

At this point, if you let it go undone, it is sure that you will unnecessarily share out from the following hours by unavoidably thinking all along about the would-be reply.

You must realize that when you are ready to write the reply, you still need to really take time to think (and even draft or retouch the draft you have made already) about what to present as reply and how to present it impressively. There are two wastes here:

A waste of accomplishment at the due time (generally called procrastination) and
A waste of bits you would have used meaningfully for other things.

The email reply case is just an illustration which I see quite pertinent in context to all people seeking to do more in less time.

The rule here is if it worth doing, do it. If not, ditch it.

The lesson is that little decision time on many of what you want to do plus instantaneous action definitely will save time for you and your business in the practical sense.

I wrote the 4 Small Business Lessons from Steve Jobs immediately after he resigned as CEO of Apple Inc. long before he died of Cancer…. So long Steve – the world misses you!!!

Its no longer news that Steve Jobs has resigned as the CEO of Apple Inc., what might be news today are some of the Small Business Lessons inherent in his life and time as Apple’s CEO.

The question that’s got me thinking is; what could have motivated an assuming guy to build what is arguably the most capitalized company in the world today?

Could it be sheer luck, passion, commitment, his team etc.? Steve Jobs is one guy I admire so much just by reading his compelling story. Here’s a guy who got kicked out from his own company, only to be called back some years later to help rescue it.

Let’s explore some Small Business Lessons from Steve Jobs

1. The first Small Business Lesson is that Steve Jobs had a great team

This guy was surrounded by the best in every field needed to make the Apple dream a reality, he sold the Apple dream to them and they bought into it. These people are so proud to be insanely great (one of Steve Jobs’ favourite phrases), they joined him to shape Apple into what she is today!

2. The 2nd Small Business Lesson is that he stayed focused and kept the entire organization focused.

It is reported that every Monday, Steve Jobs and his executive team usually checks out the entire business, including products under development. A tedious process that is almost always the same from last Monday’s and the reason for this is simply because he wanted everyone to be on the same page. This partly explains why Apple is so innovative as a company.

3. Another Small Business Lesson is that he was a great story teller

Steve never had a challenge telling the Apple story when called upon. Each time he tells a story about his plans and beliefs to the amazement of the whole world. Anytime Steve stands to give a presentation, he always in most cases holds the entire audience spell bound. What this means for you as a small business owner is that you have to master the art of communicating effectively especially when it comes to selling your product or service.

4. The last Small Business Lesson is that he is first and foremost an Apple customer.

Every time a member of Steve’s team presented anything, he listened like a customer would, he loved every product Apple created, he was passionate about it. That’s why every Apple product launch usually has customers queuing up with joy, happiness and adoration (for Steve) to buy – this is a feat. (Post Steve – iPad 4 experienced the same rush)

For Steve Jobs – the Apple customer is King, so treat her like one. Apple products are expensive but their customers pay with little or no complain.
